The healing traditions of native peoples around the world acknowledge that there are many aspects of the human being that exist beyond the realms of the average human's perception. The ancient Egyptians and the native people of the Indian subcontinent were among the first cultures to put into writing very detailed concepts of how various energies eminated from specific places in the human body. The two models of human energy anatomy that are gaining popularity with a wider audience are the chakra system from the traditions of Ayurveda and Yoga, and the system of acupuncture meridians as described by Traditional Chinese Medicine and other Oriental modalities.

Today these ancient practices are being brought back into wider consciousness. The popularity of the recent movie What the Bleep...? shows that people are ready to entertain the possibility of an energetic perspective of reality. Fueling this interest too, is the fact that technology now makes it possible to demonstrate the quantum theories of Einstein, Bohr, and Teller and to explore the very nature of our bodies, matter, and time and space. Phenomena that were once dismissed as mere folklore, or religious delusion are now being proven scientifically, with very broad reaching implications in the realm of personal healing. Read about both the science and the scientists in Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis

Dr. Richard Gerber, MD writes in Vibrational Medicine:

"Our physical form is intimately related to etheric and other subtle energetic interference patterns which determine the flow of the life force. When the relationship between the higher vibrational energies and physical matter is understood,, we will be better able to comprehend the patterns governing the flow of the life force through the physical body. Vibrational medical approaches will ultimately be proven effective because they able to to positively influence the human body's subtle energetic pathways. These pathways include the acupuncture meridian system , the chakras, and the etheric body. These little known energetic systems contribute to the final expression of the human form in both health and illness. Only when we are able to understand the role these systems play in maintaining physiological balance will we realize the true relationship between "wholeness" and "di-sease."

Energies, forces and fields that interact to form the human bio-energetic system exist across a wide spectrum of electromagnetic frequencies, from the relatively dense vibration of the physical body to the very subtle high frequency singing of the ketheric body. A term that is commonly used to describe the magnetic and electrical field that we generate through our various physiological and psycological makeup is the aura. Your aura is an energy sheath that pervades your body and radiates from it for many inches to several feet depending on your level of health and vitality. Contained within it 's vibrations (often perceived as colors by clairvoyants) are all the thoughts, emotions, memories, and beliefs that are interacting in your personal field in that given moment. Some aspects of your aura change rapidly while others remain relatively constant throughout your lifetime.

For over 70 years the technology of Kirlian photography has produced images of a sizzling envelope of energetic activity emanating from the surface of the physical body. This energetic corona is called the prana body or etheric body or

the body electric and is actually quite easily perceived by the vast vast majority of people following the exercise outlined below. Anyone who has every experienced a good yoga class has felt their prana body.

It is in this field that the whirling energy vortices of the chakras exist. The chakras are energy transformers, transferring power between layers of being. Each of the seven primary chakras manifests a specific 'layer' of the mind-body-spirit. These layers are, from most subtle to most dense:
• The Ketheric or God body
• The Clestial or light body
• The Etheric or energy body
• The Astral or dream body
• The Mental body
• The Emotional body
• The Physical body

In The Book of Chakras, Ambika Wauters writes:

"The chakras penetrate all seven layers of the aura. They act as conductors, drawing vital energy up from the earth, circulating it through the Physical body, and releasing it as higher awareness. In other words,m vitality is transmuted into awareness, spirituality, and a deeper conception of the universe. Like wise, cosmic energy moves down through the Crown Chakra and manifests as right action, creativity, and health."

Slow Motion Prana Experience

1. Start by sitting either crosslegged on the floor or in a chair with both feet on the floor. Make sure your spine is straight, but make sure you are supported comfortably.
2. Rub your palms together briskly for a few moments and then let your hands rest on your knees, palms up. Let your shoulders relax. Soften your jaw.
3. Begin to take deeper breaths, sending your inhalation down into your belly, allowing it to expand with the incoming air. Allow your exhalations to be very slow, gradually emptying your lungs completely.
4. Concentrate on the flow of your breath. Feel the movement of air on the skin at the tip of your nose. As you inhale repeat to yourself silently 'in.' As you exhale repeat to yourself 'out.'
5. Tune into your sense of touch. Feel your skin where your body touches the floor or the chair. Relax into the support there. Feel the back of your hands resting on your knees.
6. Take a few minutes to breathe deeply, inviting your mind to quiet down as you continue to observe your breathing.
7. Now imagine several helium baloons being tied to each wrist, one at a time. Feel your hands beginning to become lighter, more bouyant. Slowly, very slowly, they begin to float up off of your knees.
8. Once your hands have floated up a few inches, breathe deeply, keeping your shoulders and your jaw relaxed, and allow your palms to slowly turn to face each other.
9. Slowly, almost imperceptably, allow your palms to move closer together. Tune into the subtle sensations present in the surface of your palms and notice at what point you begin to feel the presence of one palm in the other palm. Breathe and relax and feel the space between you're hands.
10. When you're ready slowing allow your hands to float back down to your knees, and after a few moments open your eyes. Notice your heightened state of awareness.

In Part 2 of this article I will present a more detailed discussion of the Chakra system as a whole, and in Parts 3-9 I will provide more specific concepts and qualities and experiences associated with each of the individual Chakras starting with Root Chakra in Part 3.
